Makita Air Compressors

Makita MAC5200 Air CompressorThis air compressor is a top-notch performer and thus scores an 8.8 overall rating.  Users on Amazon rate it at a 4.1 out of 5 stars. Of the negative reviews, nearly 90% were from purchases made before 2007. Since then Makita has improved the quality of this model, especially the wheels which were a major complaint.

Overall it has excellent performance. It features 6.5 CFM @ 90 PSI with a 5.2 gallon tank. These attributes allow it to handle all but the most demanding tasks which require very high air flow.  It is built for quick recovery time which means the tank fills quickly. This compressor is also one of the few portable versions that is oil lubricated – which reduces wear and increases pump life.

This compressor has several nice features you don’t often find on other compressors. It has a built-in thermal overload for additional motor protection. It also comes with a built in storage compartment to store air fittings and accessories. The handle folds down to make a low profile and easy storage. The handle also has hooks built in that allow you to wrap 50 feet of air hose around them.

One problem for this Makita model is the noise. It is rated at 90 decibels which is louder than the average compressor. Despite being listed as a portable and coming with wheels, at 88 pounds it can still be difficult to move around. It is also pretty expensive at around $380.

We highly recommend this model.

Makita MAC700This one’s a bit of a paradox : The do-it-yourselfer might pass by this compressor in favor of an oil-free, no-maintenance model, but it’s actually one of the best on the market for the homeowner, hobbyist and weekend warrior.

The MAC700 puts out 80 decibels, according to the folks at Makita, and when you compare that to the 90 and up you get from most units, that’s practically a hum. So we like this for household use, especially in a basement shop.

Next on our list of pluses for the DIY-er is the low-amp draw, and with that, fewer trips to the breaker box and less chance of premature motor failure. The other feature that won us over is the easy-on-the-hand lever handle ball valve that saves your knuckles when you drain the tank. It’s also got a really fast cycle, so by the time you take a sip of water, you’re ready to work again.

It’s made like a champ, with a roll-bar handle that protects your investment, a cast-iron cylinder for durability and an oil sight glass that makes maintenance a breeze. –Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Makita AC310HThe heart of Makita’s high pressure pneumatics is the 2.5 HP High Pressure Air Compressor, model AC310H. With a high-pressure 1.6 gallon tank, the AC310H provides the same capacity as a conventional five-gallon tank at 120 PSI, but with less noise and a more compact size for easier transport. In addition, the AC310H is engineered to run high pressure and conventional nailers.

Highly-Efficient Two-Stage Pump
The AC310H has a more efficient four-pole induction motor operating at 1,720 RPM for greater displacement at lower RPM with lower noise, and a highly-efficient dual-head (two-stage) pump that builds up to 400 PSI capacity. The low AMP draw reduces the incidence of tripped breakers and voltage drop during start-up.

The AC310H has dual capacity, with two universal couplers for conventional nailers (3.6 CFM at 90 PSI) and two couplers for high pressure nailers (2.7 CFM at 300 PSI). It has an oil-less pump for maintenance-free operation, with a roll cage and kick plate to withstand extreme jobsite environments. The large rubberized bumpers are designed for added durability, with large regulator knobs for easier adjustments.

The AC310H is engineered with High Pressure Technology that dramatically increases air pressure created in the compressor and delivered to pneumatic nailers. The result is a superior power-to-weight ratio, and a more efficient system than conventional compressors. The AC310H is just another example of Makita’s commitment to innovative technology and best-in-class engineering.

Makita High Pressure Compressor Technology
Makita delivers the future of pneumatics with new high-pressure technology. The new technology dramatically increases air pressure created in the compressor and delivered to pneumatic nailers. The result is a superior power-to-weight ratio and a more efficient system than conventional compressors and nailers. Makita high-pressure technology is engineered to meet the demand for pneumatic nailers that are more compact with less weight and a better fit, yet have the capacity to drive nails into a wide range of materials including the increasingly dense engineered lumber used in framing construction. Makita High Pressure Pneumatics delivers increased efficiency, productivity and performance.
